Founder and Principal
Matthew has been working as an attorney in California since 1998. Matthew studied for and passed four College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests when he was 17 and was accepted into law school at 18. He worked as a law clerk during law school and received his Juris Doctorate degree from Cal Northern School of Law in June 2003. He passed the California Bar Exam and was sworn in as an attorney on December 1, 2003 at the age of 23. He is a licensed attorney in good standing with the State Bar of California (Bar #227479) and is a member of the Butte County Bar Association.
In 2004 Matthew partnered with his father, Loy, to establish Watkins & Watkins LLP, a Chico based law firm focusing on workers’ compensation law. During his legal career he has also provided representation in business formation, wills and trusts, CalPERS retirement law, and various civil matters.
The years of working in the highly contentious field of workers’ compensation sparked a desire to explore tools and legal alternatives that can bring about swift, complete, and satisfying resolution to disputes. In 2016 he completed Conflict Coaching and Biblical Mediation courses conducted by Peacemakers, and in 2017 he completed the 40 hour Mediation Course conducted by Steven Rosenberg Mediation Training.
Matthew has been married for 17 years and has four children. He has lived in Chico his entire life and loves the many joys offered by the North State. He loves spending time in nature, hiking and biking, and is an active member of the Evangelical Free Church of Chico. He also loves film analysis and study, especially classic and international films.
